Session 1: Monday, October 25 | 10:00 am to 12:00 pm

Developing Confidence and Resilience in Uncharted Times

Presenter:

A definition of “resilient” is being capable of returning to an original shape or position, as after having been compressed. When facing uncertainty in uncharted times, the mind and body don’t have a map to follow, and we need to create different responses. In this presentation you will expand your awareness of how the unknown is interpreted by your mind and body.

You will learn to understand the feelings associated with the unknown and how to take control of the triggers that create unsettling emotions in experiencing your life. You will learn to develop personal resources and increase your resilience in uncharted times. Most importantly, when you convey confidence and resilience you can become a positive role model for others struggling with similar issues.

Session 2: Wednesday, October 27  | 10:00 am to 12:00 pm

Compassion Fatigue: “You Gotta Name It to Tame It!”

Presenter:

The session will explore compassion fatigue and its impact on care providers and the people they support. After reviewing common signs and symptoms, we will identify strategies to respond to compassion fatigue in ourselves and others. “Naming” experiences in the most direct path to ‘taming’ them (i.e., selecting the right strategy at the right time).

Recognizing that we live and work in ‘systems,’ we will also explore collaborative and organizational approaches to helping navigate compassion fatigue. Specifically, we will identify opportunities to develop, maintain, and/or refine policies and practices that support staff wellness and engagement.

Session 3: Friday, October 29  | 10:00 am to 12:00 pm

Next Level Behaviour: Addressing Hurtful and Aggressive Behaviours in Those We Support

Presenter: Karen Hauber, Program Supervisor, Winnifred Stewart Association

As the population we support continues to age, our sector will see more and more people affected by dementia. In response to these increasing numbers, the Winnifred Stewart Association developed the Mindful Hearts dementia care training program.

This webinar session will focus on one segment of the full training program to examine next level behaviour; racial, sexual, and religious misconduct demonstrated by individuals diagnosed with dementia directed at care partners and staff.

While working with individuals diagnosed with dementia, it is important that we prepare for potentially hurtful and aggressive behaviours demonstrated by the individuals we support. Further, we need to equip ourselves with tools to effectively address the behaviour and allow for continued positive interaction and maintenance of support relationships. This session will introduce disease progression and impact on individual behaviour, review next level behaviour including where it comes from and tools to manage critical situations, rounding out with discussing options for self-care while working with individuals demonstrating next level behaviour.
