Positive Behaviour Supports

We offer three distinct PBS trainings to support frontline staff working with individuals with developmental disabilitiesPerson raising their hand in a group training session. who experience behaviours of concern:

  • Introduction to Positive Behaviour Support (PBS): Provides foundational knowledge on understanding the individual, building trust, and developing relationships to better support individuals during challenging behaviours. 
  • PBS Tutor Training: Focuses on preparing participants to become PBS tutors, equipping them to teach PBS strategies to other staff. 
  • Advanced Skills in Positive Behaviour Support (PBS): Expands on the introductory concepts, offering advanced techniques for managing more complex behaviours of concern.

Training Details 

This course introduces Positive Behaviour Supports (PBS) to frontline staff supporting individuals with developmental disabilities who experience behaviours of concern. The training emphasizes the importance of knowing the individual, building trust and relationships, and effectively supporting individuals during behavioural challenges. Training includes interactive discussions and case studies, practical application of PBS concepts and emphasis on real-world scenarios and ethical considerations.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the role of Positive Behaviour Supports and its relationship to Quality of Life for individuals with behaviours of concern.
  • Identify the ethical and philosophical foundations of Positive Behaviour Supports.
  • Recognize the Creating Excellence Together (CET) standards related to planned positive and restrictive procedures.
  • Explain the connection between PBS and Person-Centered Planning.
  • Discuss how behaviours of concern serve as a form of communication, identifying unmet needs or environmental triggers.
  • Increase awareness of effective observation and charting techniques to understand behaviour patterns.
  • Identify and define different types of behavioural strategies and interventions, categorizing them as positive or restrictive.
  • Outline staff roles and responsibilities in implementing positive behavioural support plans.
  • Recognize the behaviour planning process, including functional behaviour assessment, planning, and implementation.

Introduction to Positive Behaviour Supports Tutor Training (Train-the-Trainer) is designed for individuals who will be training others in Positive Behaviour Supports (PBS) within their organization. This program equips tutors with the knowledge and skills to effectively teach PBS concepts, apply adult learning principles, and facilitate engaging and interactive virtual training sessions. Tutors will receive training in adult learning principles and virtual facilitation strategies, engage in live practice with peer evaluations, and gain access to PBS-related tutor resources through the Learning Management System (LMS).

  • Lead discussions and activities to enhance understanding of functional behaviour assessment, behaviour planning, and implementation.
  • Deliver an effective training presentation on PBS topics as part of the tutor evaluation process.

The curriculum provides a comprehensive overview of behaviour management, assessment, case studies and intervention strategies.

Prerequisite

Participants must have completed Positive Behaviour Supports training (Level 1 + 2 or Introduction to PBS) OR have demonstrated experience with behavioural supports through a combination of education, training, and work history.
